A Holiday Travel Blog

Day 1

We spent the day exploring the Pacific Rim National Park. We began driving down to Ucleulet on the Lighthouse Trail and then on to Brown Beach and continued to part of the Wild Pacific Trail. It was beautiful coast line, very rocky, lots of lookout points, rock pools and even a shipwreck.

In the afternoon we headed to Coombe's Beach for a paddle and sand house competition. We continued - to my highlight - Schooner Beach. It was a little walk to get there but just the more beautiful cove and barely anybody about. We spent quite a bit of time just enjoying the peaceful and relaxing surroundings.

We visited Radar Hill for a view - although it was pretty overgrown and difficult to see! We went for a sunset walk on North Chesterman's beach down to Wickannish Inn for a meal with a gorgeous view to continue watching the sunset.

Day 2

Quite honestly, my best day EVER! It began with a surf lesson at Pacific Surf Co.  it was so much fun! I was actually quite nervous before but we started with an on sand lesson of what to do, and safety. Our instructor was brilliant and made us race into the sea and dunk our head. We got 2 hours in the water practicing, and surprisingly made good progress. We could both stand and surf the white waves by the end, but neither dared go further out to tackle some of the bigger waves. It was so tiring - my body ached afterwards. I got white washed so many times and felt like I had drank the sea but it was awesome. I can't wait to go surfing again. I loved it! No photos though - too busy having a great time!

After a well deserved shower we went to the famous Tacofino for lunch - yummy! Our afternoon was equally action packed with a bear watching tour with Remote Passages on board a zodiac boat. It went really fast and I was pleased to have the waterproof suit and wooly hat! We were so so lucky! We saw 1 bald eagle, 6 black bears and (my dream!) 3 bear cubs! It was amazing, we pulled up towards the shore and watched the bears foraging for shellfish and eating barnacles off trees.

For dinner we went to a lovely restaurant in Tofino called Sobo.

The best sunset of the holiday that night from the harbour in Tofino!

Day 3

We booked on to a full day sea kayaking trip with Tofino Sea Kayaking on the Hidden Places Tour in the Clayquot Sound area - we headed across to Meare's Island and up the Lemmings Inlet. We paddled through the calm sea and beautiful scenery seeing shipwrecks, a bald eagle, an oyster farm, porpoises, seals and some sea slugs. It was really interesting as our brilliant guide told us stories about the native people and history of the area. He made a musical instrument out of kelp. Half way through you pull up to a beach area for a picnic and a much needed stretch of your legs. It was an excellent trip.

After our trip we headed out of Tofino and across the island to Parksville. We would be heading back to Vancouver from Nainamo the next day. I had booked Tom on a birthday skydiving trip in Parksville which he very much enjoyed!
